WELLINGTON
ROUND THE BAYS
Fun Run/Walk
Round the Bays takes place along the Wellington Waterfront, the largest mass participation event in the lower North Island and the third-largest in New Zealand.
Since 2020, Nonstop Solutions has partnered with Round the Bays Wellington on a zero waste journey, during which they have made significant strides, becoming our first fully reuse event and achieving an outstanding 99.86% resource recovery rate in 2024, solidifying itself as a zero waste event.
Over the past years, Round the Bays has transitioned away from single use water vessels to reusable cups on the course. With Nonstops’ help, all food trucks, hospitality tents and coffee carts at the finish line have successfully made the switch to reuse, serving their coffee and kai on reusable plates, bowls and cups for the past two years.
JOURNEY TO REUSE
2018: In 2018, our relationship was established with Nuku Ora, where we began consulting to reduce waste at Round the Bays Wellington. Their highest waste generator was found to be plastic cups and water bottles across the course and finish line. As a result of this, a priority was set to introduce reusable cups.
2019: Reusable cups were introduced onsite, replacing approximately 50,000 single use cups and bottles.
2020: Nonstop Solutions brings a team onsite for the first time to audit all remaining waste generated, hand sorting for the first year at Round the Bays.
2021: With a clear picture of the waste onsite, we were back onsite for 2021, working with vendors to replace landfill packaging with compostable and recyclable alternatives. 91% of event resources were diverted from landfill.
2022: COVID cancels the 2022 event
2023: Round the Bays took the significant step to make the switch to reuse! All food trucks at Kilbirnie Park went single use free, serving their food and drinks on reusable plates, cups and bowls, serviced by Nonstop Solutions.
2024: Round the Bays becomes the first event of its kind in New Zealand to go fully reuse! All food trucks, cups along the course and hospitality sites at Kilbirnie Park were single use service-ware free. Round the Bays Wellington achieved a 99.86% resource recovery rate, with only 6kg of landfill produced across the whole event.
2025: Our next goal is to make the remaining small changes, such as reusable napkins and barbecue trays, in a move to eliminate 100% of all controllable single use in 2025.
